
A big chop can be a thrilling, empowering, and terrifying decision. While some clients are ready to shed the weight of their long locks, others end up with some serious regret over the shorter style. And when they do, they often land in our chair asking for us to "fix it". It's a tough dilemma, because while we know the truth is that it'll eventually grow out, we also want to provide some short-term relief instead of telling them to hit the pavement. If you aren't going to take the Fleabag route and convince them "it's French!", here are our tips on how to help console and do damage control on a short cut your client regrets.
Validate Their Concerns Without Causing More Damage
This first step is a critical part of maintaining trust with your client. Nobody wants you to agree wholeheartedly that this is the worst haircut they've ever seen. Nobody wants to hear how unflattering it is, what a bad job was done, or what a mistake they've made. At least not until it's grown out and a funny story they look back on.
What you want to do here is split the difference between "I actually really like it on you and think you should keep it" and "You're right it's hideous". Easier said than done, but this sort of bedside manner is why they pay you the big bucks. Try something like... "I don't think it's as bad as you're seeing it, but I can see a few areas we could tweak to make it more 'you', let's talk about our options." This requires extra delicate tweaking if you were the one who cut the original haircut...

Switch Up the Part
Sometimes flipping the part over, moving it around, and seeing how it plays with the shape of a face can really change how a cut feels. This is simple, easy, and often effective!
Add Layers
If the blunt nature of the bob is adding volume where it doesn't belong, or if the lack of face framing is feeling harsh-- layers could come to the rescue!
Find the Right Length
If your client is open to going a little shorter, perhaps you can find a better place for the length to hit on them and fix it this way. Obviously, you can't add length back so tread lightly here.
Help with Styling
If your client liked the style leaving the salon but found it fell flat at home, you might be able to show them how to style it better and find they actually do like the cut. Adding texture, the right products, and accessories could help them love it again.
Go For a Big Fix
If your client is dead set on getting their longer lengths back, extensions might be the only thing that makes them happy. It's a good thing they went to you, a professional! Extensions are a great way to tolerate a less-than-perfect chop as it grows and while they may not get their full length back right away, we can certainly take the edge off of the suffering by adding a few inches right away.
Use High-End Products
You want to avoid breakage, damage, and shedding - so choose a high-quality weft that will wear well and protect their natural hair as it grows out. When it comes to blending the extensions or blonding - you also want to choose products that are professional quality so the natural hair can maintain the health it needs to grow out strong.

Trying everything you can to create a style that makes them smile is a worthwhile cause, after all, we've all gotten a haircut we weren't thrilled with and understand what a bummer it is.
