But it can be a self-fulfilling cycle if we aren't mindful of breaking it. Hair is frizzy so it goes in a ponytail, elastic causes more breakage so we continue to not like our hair worn down, so on and so forth. Is it realistic to never put your hair into a messy bun for the gym again? Absolutely not. So we're rounding up alternatives to traditional ties and clips with features that cause less damage on your hair in the long run. 

Non-Damaging Hair Ties

Elastic bands have long been our go-to, but in recent years we've seen some great innovations that can help you prevent damage before it happens. Look for silk wrapped mini-scrunchies or if you rely on elastic bands, get a seamless version that won't snag and pull. 

Part of preventing damage is also avoiding styles that require extra tight bands-- so think twice before reaching for that slicked back pony that pulls your hair super tight. 

Turn to Hair Claws

Hair claws are a great alternative to elastic bands to sweep hair off your neck. Look for one that is sized right for your hair length and thickness and examine it for grippy materials, rough edges, or anything else that might snag and pull your hair in a rough way. Again, styling this gently is the way to go, you shouldn't have to force the clip into your hair to get it to stay. If you're finding it won't stay put you might need a size up or down in clip depending on if it's loose or too tight. 

There are hair clips wrapped in satin, lay flat versions, and mini versions you can to find your perfect fit. 

Look for Safer Clips

We've come a long way from the clips and pins of yesteryear, but damaging metals, rough edges, and too many parts can still be found in many clips. Look for creaseless or seamless clips to use while styling or for clipped looks. These will prevent hair getting tangled within the clip and ripping out.
