Welcome to the SOHO Diaries

The SOHO Diaries started as a way to explore the Masters of Balayage SOHO color line… but like most good ideas, it evolved. Somewhere between formulas and foils, it became a running commentary on what it takes to make beautiful hair in real time.

Hair color is having a moment, but also a mild identity crisis. We survived the dramatic high-fashion and high-contrast era. We perfected lived-in balayage. We convinced clients that ash is not a personality trait. And for those of us old enough to remember emo raccoon tails the first time around, watching Alysa Liu glide to Olympic gold with high-contrast streaks is both inspiring and slightly triggering.

I’ve been behind the chair long enough to watch formulas get smarter and expectations get louder. AI has only accelerated the demand for airbrushed perfection, and it’s our job to translate that into something that actually behaves like real hair and survives real life. The tension between fantasy and feasibility? That’s where the craft lives.

And that’s why you’re reading the SOHO Diaries.

This space exists because hair color has never been more accessible, or more misunderstood. After 20 years behind the chair, I can tell you this: good color isn’t about chasing trends. It’s about chemistry, timing, restraint, and reading the canvas in front of you. It’s part art, part science, and part emotional intelligence.

The SOHO Diaries is where we talk about how to use the Masters of Balayage SOHO line in the real world, not just what it can do, but why it works. We’ll cover formulation logic, maintenance conversations, trend translation, and the quiet decisions that make the biggest difference. Those are the ones that don’t always make the Instagram grid but absolutely determine whether your client re-books.

Because spectacular is fun.

But sustainable is powerful.

Consider this your ongoing notebook from behind the chair, written for stylists who want to stay booked, busy, and still love the work.

Until next time!
