STEP 1:
SET A PRE-CONSULTATION APPOINTMENT
If you can, schedule a mandatory consultation prior to booking any new client’s appointment to manage booking time, as well as set early expectations.
*Mainly for new clients wanting a big transformation.
STEP 2:
ESTABLISH A TRUSTING RELATIONSHIP
Greet your client with confidence, then take a seat so you’re face-to-face. Standing over or behind someone during a consultation can feel intimidating, so keep the interaction grounded and comfortable. And don’t forget to smile—genuinely.
STEP 3:
CONTROL THE CONVERSATION
Stay focused on your client and the vision you’re creating together. Ask the questions you need without getting lost in small talk—there’ll be plenty of time for that during the appointment. Keep the conversation clear and purposeful so your client feels confident they’re in expert hands.
STEP 4:
TALK GOALS / INSPIRATION
Most clients come with inspiration pics and an idea of what they want. Use these images to uncover exactly what they like and don’t like. The color, the cut, the dimension, etc.
STEP 5:
TALK HAIR HISTORY
Play detective and ask a lot of questions about their hair history. What have they done to their hair over the last 5 years? Any box color, henna, or permanent? The more you know the better.
STEP 6:
TALK APPOINTMENT EXPECTATIONS
Tell them what time to arrive (and why they can’t be late), how to arrive (ex. clean hair), and the approximate time you expect the visit will take. Explain style maintenance as well (every 4-6 weeks, etc.).
STEP 7:
TALK HOME CARE
Discuss home expectations. What products they need to use and how to preserve the color and integrity.
STEP 8:
BE REALISTIC
Although we always shoot for the stars, we shouldn’t immediately promise we’ll get there. Offer realistic expectations and maintenance. If their goal hair requires
additional sessions and awkward stages, now is the time to tell them.
STEP 9:
TALK PRICE / COMMITMENT
If you can’t give an exact cost, offer a clear price range expanding from your minimum to your maximum. Explaining what could affect the final total prevents surprises and builds trust.
Be honest about the maintenance required, too: whether the look is low or high upkeep and how often touch-ups will be needed.
*Mostly for new clients. Use your judgment.
STEP 10:
ANSWER ALL OF THEIR QUESTIONS
Leave nothing on the table. Answer their questions clearly and thoughtfully so they feel completely at ease. Focus on uncovering both what they want and what they want to avoid.

I found this post on the perfect consultation in ten steps really clear because it breaks down a process that can feel vague into simple actions you can follow, and it reminded me of when I had to learn how to plan my own projects step by step in class. At that time I used ISI Journal Publication Service that I personally used to tidy up a long draft before I shared it with my professor, and that helped my focus. It makes me see that clear steps and thoughtful planning help both writing and real-world tasks go more smoothly.
I read the tips about a perfect consultation and it made sense how talking first can help avoid mix ups and get better results for both sides. I remember when I was stressed with a big paper I used a Law project editing service to fix mistakes and make my writing clear before I handed it in. It taught me that good prep and help can make hard work feel easier.
